Our class called Technology in Society, not only focuses on general uses of technology such as typing, software application, and digital citizenship but now includes STEAM components. STEAM is the focus of science, technology, engineering, arts, & math. It is with this new approach that I feel we can better tie in real-world applications and begin to introduce basic vocational skills for our students. Each grade level has its own special STEAM project, making each year unique learning experience for your child. The chart below outlines those activities.

7th & 8th Grade STEAM Classes
7th & 8th graders will have the opportunity to operate our various types of power tools. These include: a belt sander, drill press, a hand-operated drill, and a band saw. I would like to stress that before students are allowed to run the lab machinery, they must:
-
Watch our video tutorials.
-
Take the safety quiz and pass with 100%.
-
Get & sign a parent permission slip (given to students upon completion).
-
Maintain a copy of this signed permission slip.
-
Be directly supervised by the tech lab instructor.
Any questions, please send an email rather than calling. I am able to check email throughout the day and have found this method quicker and more effective for me to respond back to you.

Classroom Information
ABOUT OUR PROGRAM : Typing.com
Since 2014, we have used a typing program to prepare students for their annual state exams and the rigors of high school. State requirements have students typing at a specific rate of speed and accuracy, so our goal is to help get them as close to that as possible. To give you some background information, Typing.com is an online program that does a tremendous job collecting data, which is used by myself and students to identify areas of improvement. The way this works is very simple, students log in to the program from a location and device of their choice, and then participate in a series of lessons that focuses on muscle memory, key location, speed, & accuracy. Upon the completion of a lesson, skills are reviewed, and a new lesson, one more difficult than the one before, is then presented. The process then repeats itself until all lessons are completed. In addition to the lessons, students will be taking quarterly tests. These tests may be taken as many times as necessary, and at the end of each quarter, students typing grade will be based on established quarterly WPM scales (click to see link), students must have a minimum of 70% accuracy.
Grading
In addition, grading this year will be done using standards-based reports; these will help you see what your student’s strengths & weaknesses are so you can provide additional support at home as you see fit. To view the criteria, please log into your child's Skyward account. I have posted all criteria and will update each quarter, so please don't be alarmed if something is left blank. Most likely we just have not covered that material yet, but will before the end of the year.
As always, if you have any questions, please email me at jpoole@d50schools.com.
