Sodom & Gomorrah

Genesis 18:32 Then he (Abraham) said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten (righteous people) can be found there?” (Sodom) He (the Lord) answered, “For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it.”

This is speaking about God destroying Sodom and Gomorrah. Verse 20 says, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin so grievous that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not I will know.”

There may have been many sins in these two cities as with any city, but the sin that was obvious was that of homosexuality. Even when two of God’s angels went into the city 10:4 say all the men of city came to take the angels to have sex with them. It was only because of the power of the angels that blinded the men of Sodom that prevented the men from sinning against the angels and God. It is not wrong or sinful for a person to have characteristics of the opposite gender. I have known wonderful Christians where a lady might have some masculine characteristics and men who had feminine characteristics, but they were not homosexual or lesbian. What makes the sin is having sexual relations with the same sex. This is in direct rebellion against God’s purpose for sexual relations and that is to fill or replenish the earth with people.

Sin is doing what God has said not to do, or not doing what he said to do. Homosexuality is just one of many ways to sin against God. One of the most common sins and the greatest sin is not to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. (Mk 12:30) And as you know no one does this all the time. Not even the most dedicated pastor, priest or religious person. As scripture tells us all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. (Rom 3:23) That’s why everyone needs a Savior, and only God’s only begotten Son who was without sin could make an atonement that could bring about everyone's forgiveness. Does this mean that Homosexuality and every other sin is alright to do? As the apostle Paul said,”God forbid!”

Jesus didn’t die for us to purposely continue to sin and sin all the more! He came to forgive us, reconcile us with the Godhead (Trinity), and transform us into the righteous holy people that he created us to be from the very beginning. This he does by setting us free of our carnal nature of rebellion from God’s will, and then with ever increasing measure he daily helps us to be more like himself in righteousness and holiness. Just as the Lord was willing to spare Sodom if only ten righteous people could be found, God is still searching for those whose hearts are seeking forgiveness and reconciliation with him. In Luke 15:3-7 Jesus makes this point that the good shepherd (Jesus) will leave the ninety-nine sheep to find the one that is lost.

God does not hate the sinner, but rather the sin that separates that person for him. God loves you! John 3:16 tells us that God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. You have sinned and so have I! We can’t change our past, but we can do something about our future. If you have not asked Jesus to forgive you of your sins and to come into your heart, DO IT NOW! You may never have this chance again, because God respects your free will and you can harden your heart like Pharaoh towards God. When you do you will pay for your sin by spending eternity in hell. In hell there is no love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness or self-control. There is nothing good about hell.

I became a Christian when I was twenty-five years old. My only regret is that I didn’t start loving and living my life for Jesus when I was three like my son and daughter. Jesus has only been good to me and blessed me more than what I ever could have on my own. WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO LOSE EXCEPT YOUR SINS AND ETERNITY IN HELL?

Prayer: Thank you Lord Jesus for caring about the one, and thank you for caring about us all! We love you Jesus!
