Psalms 118:22-24 The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; the Lord has done this and it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Rome was famous for their engineering. After the fall of Rome it was many years before the rest of the world figured out how they accomplished much of what they did. They were famous for using water to power things as well as to figure out how to pump it up huge mountains by simply using its own force. They put in sewer systems through Rome that are still being used today, and are just as efficient as they ever were. They invented cement that would even harden under water. They made cinder blocks that made the colosseum and others that are still standing today. But one of the most noted feats of engineering was the arch. It not only was beautiful, but efficient in distributing the weight of walls. What made the arch possible was one cleverly cut rock that is call the capstone. This capstone put pressure down and out that held the archway in its place. Without the right cut on the capstone, and not only the arch would collapse, but the walls it helped to support would also fall. Because of their ability to cut the capstone so well, buildings like the colosseum in Rome still stand after hundreds of years enduring bad weather and earthquakes.
Jesus is God’s perfect capstone for humanity. Hebrews 2:10 says, “In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering.” You may like I first thought, “But Jesus is God, and he has always been perfect.”. That is true except being God he never experienced the cross until he came to earth. Jesus never knew pain, temptation, fear, dread or physical death. Because he came and experienced all of this and more, he could emphasize and not just sympathized for us and our sinful condition. Because of the cross he could tell the Heavenly Father and the Holy Spirit, “I know what it is like for them.” Jesus was never imperfect from the standpoint of not being perfect, but from the standpoint of completeness.
Because of the cross, Jesus is able in every way to support us that we might stand against Satan, the powers of darkness, the evil of this world and even the weakness of our humanity. When we have Jesus in our heart and life, we have his backing, authority and his support. He is able to bring us to our day of salvation. While we are weak and prone to falling short, he is more than able to make up for all that and more, so we can go be with him, the Heavenly Father and the Holy Spirit for all eternity.
When we have Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we don’t have to go through life like we are walking on eggshells. Our confidence and assurance is one that is perfect in every way, and more than able to meet any need that we may have.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for all that you have done for us, and thank you for all that you will do. We are confident that neither time, location or situation will ever pull us away from you. We love you Jesus!
