Annointment
Genesis 15:6 Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.
How can we be righteous on our own before the Lord? Maybe by doing what is right. Abram was told by God that he was Abram’s shield or sovereign. Sovereign means unlimited or boundless power. God wanted Abram to understand that he had more power to protect and help him than he would ever need. Abram had just returned from having war with four mighty kings. He had defeated them in battle, but they had retreated and their armies were still intact, just scattered. Although Abram had won the battle he feared for an on going war. This would be the practice of the people of the middle east for thousands of years. They would fight, retreat and then build up their forces for revenge returning to do more battle. II Sam 11:1 tells us that David talks about sending Joab out, because spring was the time for war. They saw it as almost a ritual or natural thing to do.
Abram was small in number compared to these rival kings. Now God was reassuring him that he didn’t have anything to worry about, because he had one that boundless power behind him. God was reminding Abram that he was his assurance. We see the same thing in Romans 8:31 where it says, “If God is for us who can be against us?” Because God was there to protect Abram, he didn’t have to worry, and because God is there to protect us, we don’t have to worry either! There is no power greater than our God. Satan, the powers of darkness and the evil of this world all together couldn’t begin to overcome the Lord! God also tells Abram that he is Abram’s great reward. Often we tend to think of our great reward as God bringing us success, beautiful homes and cars and the like, and of course eternal blessings in heaven. But these as wonderful as they are don’t begin to compare to the wonderful blessing of being in the presence of Jesus our Groom, the Heavenly Father and Holy Spirit!
Just as we certainly want the Lord’s protection and blessing here on earth, we should even more so seek his presence now. This is infact what he created us for in the first place. God the Holy Trinity, wants to walk with and help us through our entire day just like he wanted to with Adam and Eve. We can have no greater day or joy than to practice God’s presence moment by moment in our everyday life. If we want to be righteous, we need to do what is right and this means including the Lord in every moment of our life. Believe like Abram that the Lord wants to be your God and you too will be righteous.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for forgiving us of our sins and making us holy before you. Please help us to be righteous before you by always doing what is right and always practicing your presence moment by moment in our life. Thank you Lord, and we ask this in your name that is above all names.
