GOD WILL NOT BETRAY OUR TRUST IN HIM
Psalm 62:5-8 Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.
There is a saying that there is no rest for the wicked. I suppose they are referring to fear of reprisal for something that they did to someone else. It could refer to everyone having to work hard to even stay alive. Someone has to put food on the table so to speak. It could mean a number of things I guess, but the effect of any of these things brings about worry. People have worried about things since Adam and Eve sinned against God, and worried about having to give account to God for it. It is something common to all people. The main reason for it is our lack of control. If we had perfect control over everything there would be no need to worry, but none of us do. Even the multi-billionaires we hear about today have worries. All they have to do is have a close friend their age come down with incurable cancer. After all everyone is going to die and experience the death process unless they are raptured to heaven.
Worry can literally drive a person crazy. It can make a person so mentally unstable that sometimes they curl up into a fetal position and not respond to anyone. It can bring illness. It can make a person so paranoid that they will not leave their house. Basicly the only way to be set free from worry is to have someone that you can trust in that can handle all the threats that could possibly come into your life.
Jesus talks about worry in Matt 6:25-34. He says, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” So, is Jesus telling us to sit back and get a glass of ice tea and wait for someone to provide for us. No He is saying we are to trust in him to help us to have all we need. We need to seek his help with our job that it may go well, and our employer will show us favor. We need to trust the Lord to not only meet all our needs, but when we put him first in our life as it says in Psalm 37:4 he will even give us our hearts desires. It is a matter of doing our best today knowing that he will bring about what we need. In a way it is funny how by trusting in the Lord for all we need, we can enjoy what we have a whole lot more.
Today there is a terrible practice of greed in the United States. The more people have the more they want, and the more they are afraid they are going to lose it. Caterpillar had record profits last year, and this spring they laid of many people rather than trying to take care of their employees. Just yesterday Verizon threatened to break the union over a pay increase for their employees even after they had several billion dollars of profit. These two major companies are making more money than they ever have, and care less about their employees and their families! With greed comes worry, and with worry will come their destruction. If we can’t enjoy what we have, and bless others glorifying the Lord in the process what good is all that money? It is obvious that the wealth of these and other major corporations as well as their multi-million dollar executives can’t have peace of mind and heart, or they wouldn’t treat people this way. But a person doesn’t have to be a millionaire, not to have peace of mind and heart. The very poor can be in the same condition too. They can’t enjoy life because of how they face tomorrow. The bottom line is where does our trust lie. If it is anywhere else but in the Lord, we will not have peace or joy in our life.
Prayer: Thank you Lord for loving and taking such good care of us. We trust you Lord for all of our needs and even our hearts desires. You are a wonderful God. We bring this to you in Jesus name.
