JESUS IS OUR SHIELD AND HIGH TOWER
Psalms 3:3,4 But you are a shield around me, O Lord, my Glorious One, who lifts up my head. To the Lord I cry aloud, and he answers me from his holy hill.
Have you ever wanted God to literally do this for you? I am sure you have because almost everyone at some time or another we have felt the attack or persecution of someone or something coming against them. When we read in Psalms 22 about prophecy concerning Jesus passion on the cross, we see where Jesus wanted protection himself. It is no wonder why he asked the Heavenly Father in the garden if there was another way. Jesus need a shield all about him, but there was none given. For the first time in Jesus existence Jesus was making himself vulnerable. Now Jesus could emphasize for us and not just sympathize for us. Because of Calvary Jesus would know what it was like to not have the protection of God.
Psalms 22 says, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from the words of my groaning? I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by the people. All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads: ‘He trusts in the Lord; let the Lord rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him’. Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help. Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me. Roaring lions tearing their prey open their mouths wide against me. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted away within me. My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death. Dogs have surrounded me; and a band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and my feet. I can count all my bones people stare and gloat over me. They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing. But you, O Lord, be not far off; O my Strength, come quickly to help me.”
King David lived about 1,000 years before Jesus came to earth to atone for our sins on Calvary’s cross. Yet, it was through David that God chose to reveal not only what the cross would be like for Jesus, his very words, but also the loneliness of his death. Even though Mary his mother, John and some other women were there, his Heavenly Father had to turn from him. As much as his Heavenly Father wanted to prevent the cross he couldn’t if it meant our salvation. Jesus came to earth all knowing how terrible the passion of the cross would be, yet he came so we wouldn’t have to be alone at our death.
There is not a moment in our life that we have to be absent of the Lord in our life or even death. The Lord is always there to be a shield around us if we only want him to be there. He alone is the all Glorious One that can lift up our head when he had to bow his. As a Christian and a child of God, we no longer have to fear the absence of the Lord in our life. Jesus promised us that he would never leave us or forsake us. Yes, we will have difficult times in our life here on earth and experience death if we are not raptured out, but that doesn’t mean that he will abandon us. It means he will help us through those tough times and the terrible storms of life. But as those times may rage all about us, he will be our shield and we will have peace and hope within us. The Lord is our mighty shield and fortress. There is nothing that can come against us that is greater than our Lord. Remember that because you belong to Jesus you have the authority and power of God about us and Jesus in us. Because of Jesus we can have courage to face another tomorrow.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for all you did for us on Calvary’s cross. Thank you for all you have done for us and will do. Please be patient with us, because in your love and faithfulness we place our hope. It is your name we ask this.
