DO YOU HAVE A COMMITTED SPIRIT?

Psalms 31:5 Into your hands I commit my spirit; redeem me, O Lord, the God of truth.

If this sounds familiar it is because as Jesus hung on Calvary’s cross he said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” He didn’t say this because King David had written it, but he he said it because he had told King David write it. Jesus knew want he was getting into regarding our atonement before he ever left his throne of glory in heaven to come to earth. He knew where he had come from and where he was going back to. The point we need take from this is the act of committing our spirit unto the Lord. Until we become a Christian and trust in Jesus to forgive us of our sins and to come into our heart, we constantly live in a state of rebellion towards God and all that is righteous and holy. We are masters of our own spirit and like Adam and Even, we want to be our own god. We will never know victory until we surrender. We can fight against sin in our life, by trying not to sin and do good works, but we will never have peace in our spirit.

Our carnal nature that we inherited from Adam and Eve will continue to pull us away from God. When we surrender to the Lord, and commit our spirit unto him the Holy Spirit comes into our heart and cleanses us of that rebellious spirit. In doing this we are not only free from this rebellious spirit, but the Holy Spirit now puts within us a desire to do God’s will. As we have committed our spirit to the Lord, he has committed his to us. John 14:17-23 tells us that God the Heavenly Father, his Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit come to live in us.

When Jesus told his Heavenly Father that he committed his spirit to him, Jesus was saying that what he had committed himself in doing was at last done. From the moment that God created humanity, he was committed to reconciliation. This is why from the very beginning we see his intention all through the Old Testament. From the beginning Jesus was committed to saving us.

Are you committed to Jesus? Have you asked him to forgive you of your sins and to come into your heart? Are you committed to living your life for him? True commitment like Jesus’ is to us is a wholehearted one. There is no need to hold back what God cherishes. You can trust Jesus!

Prayer: Thank you Jesus for being so committed to us. Please help us to be as committed to you. We love you Jesus, and ask this in your holy name.
